Flat Description:

Chepstow Place – The owners of this beautiful 4th floor walk-up flat divide their time between Rome & London, and a keen Italian eye for design shines through in the simple and luxe choices they’ve made for their London pied-a-terre. The overall feeling of the holiday home here is one of being gently tucked up and away from it all – this apartment is rather like a hug. *NOTE that our photos were taken just after the flat was renovated and the furnishings being moved in, so they may not reflect the truest sense of comfort and style that this flat offers.

On the smaller side for two bedrooms – really more of a 1-bedroom for practical purposes – but with a wonderful, airy, open, vaulted ceiling in the combined sitting/dining room the flat was recently renovated and makes good use of its spaces. Not unlike a yacht or a luxury liner, the choices here make sense for the space, and make for a sense of adventure, with just the thoughtful touches to make you feel at home even as you are off galavanting around a foreign city. The galley kitchen has curving countertops that swirl you in and out for tea or wine or biscuits. The compact double bedroom has a platform bed snuggled into the alcove of the room, with a perfect window port looking out to the trees and courtyard outside. The second bedroom is set up as an office, with two elegant convertible chair beds for an extra guest or the little ones to snuggle up inside.

Entry & Layout

Enter the flat after walking up 3 easy flights of stairs into a small alcove leading to the final flight of steps into the flat. A coat rack and umbrella stand await your belongings before ascending the lushly carpeted stairs. At the top of the stairs is an open landing under a skylight, with the sitting room through a doorway straight ahead, the small office/second bedroom just at the right, and the kitchen, bathroom and main bedroom off to the left.

Sitting Room/Dining Room

This is a generous space, comfortable and simply decorated with rich light gray walls, soft dark gray carpeting and big double-paned windows out to the rooftops of Notting Hill and Kensington. A decorative fireplace and stereo line one wall, across from the arc of the second wall that curves gently to open the space even more. Two oversize easy chairs with moveable foot rests sit under the light-filled windows. A designer Italian dining table seats 4 against the back wall of the room, with a great cascade light fixture and skylights up above. 4 white Italian designer chairs line the table. The kitchen is a few steps down the hallway/landing.

Kitchen

The galley style kitchen is charming, with curved wood counters and a picture window out to a courtyard behind the building. It is a smartly designed space with high end appliances and thoughtful details in the shelving and serve ware presented here. Modern conveniences include gourmet oven and stovetop, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, washer/dryer and refrigerator.

Bedrooms/Bathroom

The cozy main bedroom is located between the kitchen and the sitting room, adjacent to the good sized bathroom. Reminiscent of an old ships quarters, the Queen bed is tucked into a nook with a round portal and window looking out over the trees outside and garden path below. Plenty of storage here as a closet lines one wall, with a beautiful Italian mother-of-pearl inlaid chest of drawers. This is a simple, romantic and comfortable sleeping space.

The second bedroom is multi-purpose room that functions as an office or a convertible bedroom. It is also a small and cozy room, with a table and a large armoire/closet unit. While this London apartment rental is really best for 1 or 2 renters, the office can be converted to a sleeping space, using the clever footstools from the sitting room which are fold-out single beds that can be set up for sleeping by request.

The comfortable bathroom is located next to the main bedroom, off the kitchen. It features a romantic clawfoot tub with shower-over-tub, toilet and sink. A window lets in good light and an airy feeling.

Location:

The most convenient underground stop is Notting Hill Gate, a 6 to 7-minute walk. There are many buses nearby as well, including the 70, which will have you at South Kensington tube station in about 15 minutes.

A few blocks away is a charming local Mediterranean/Greek deli and bakery, Haminados. The owner is charming, the food is unfussy and perfect, not to mention reasonably priced, delicious and easily enjoyed on the cute stone patio out back, decorated with a live olive tree and random framed photos of The Beatles. Great pastries, home-style food, open 6am to 10pm. In addition and just stumbling distance from your vacation rental home away from home are a number of posh London establishments, including famous Granger & Co, which always has a long line of patrons out the door.

This is a desirable area, hip and artistic, filled with restaurants, interesting shops, boutiques, organic markets and of course the daily produce stalls and weekly antique markets of Portobello Road.  Plus, the Notting Hill neighborhood is in great and easy proximity to all that London has to offer.

About Notting Hill:

The yearly Notting Hill carnival takes place in August, and you’ll definitely want to know about it if it will be happening during your stay. A very lively event, it can be lots of fun to be a part of, or a complete bummer if you aren’t expecting it while on holiday and seeking the peace and quiet of a centrally located but residential area.

Home to many well-known and celebrated shops and bookstores, including Blenheim Books. Some of the best antique and boutique shopping can be found here, as well as excellent Caribbean and French-African food.
