Flat Description:

Chepstow Road House – In a most desirable Notting Hill location, this house allows visitors to inhabit not just a London building, but a true sense of living like a Londoner in the artistic, trendy and somewhat bohemian (well, higher-rent versions of bohemia, shall we say?) area of the city.

The owner of this fine privately-owned holiday home is an art historian and curator and that fact is evident from the moment you step in the door. This is a most excellent house, filled with art and thoughtful, creative design choices, from accent walls in rich deep colors of paint, to the placement of a citrus tree under the window of a sunny landing.

The 4-story layout provides a good division of space for guests to enjoy cooking, dining and socializing together, while still maintaining privacy.

First Floor: Kitchen/Dining Room (and Guest Powder Room)

Enter the house after walking up a few stone steps at the front of the property. This is not the ground floor, exactly, more of an elevated first floor, higher up from street-level.

The large dining room is located off the entry hall and has a dark accent wall, large bright window and a fireplace. The dining table seats 8-10. There are built-ins holding lovely glasses and serveware, and the walls are hung with gorgeous art.

The dining room is opens to the smart modern kitchen, which has dark tile floors, black marble counters and lots of white cabinetry with black knobs. There is a fridge/freezer, 5-burner gas stove, wall oven, dishwasher, microwave and all the tools a home cook would need to whip up brilliant meal, perhaps made up of freshly procured Portobello Market produce!

Down the hall to the back of the house, under the stairs, is the guest powder room and the  steps out to the furnished private garden. The small loo has rich charcoal colored walls and ceiling and wonderful art displayed, as in the rest of the house though just a bit more cheeky in some cases.

The clean, airy and private patio garden has low brick planters and wooden patio furniture, complete with an umbrella for al fresco outdoor dining in the shade. The owner has recently added a heater and wifi that extends into the garden. This outdoor living room is a great addition to an already outstanding vacation home.

2nd Floor: Sitting Room

Up the stairs to the second level, consisting of the large L-shaped living/sitting room. The generous, comfortable space is luxuriously appointed, with comfortable sofas, easy chair, touchable throws and fabrics, richly painted walls, bookcases filled with art books and antique notions, a gas fireplace, large windows and a flat screen television with cable.

The small leg of the L-shaped room houses a piano (purportedly once owned by a very famous British performer with the initial EJ) and built-in bookcases, again with filled lots of wonderful books. The large window looks down to the private garden below. Both parts of this full-floor room are filled with plants or potted palms and Asian rugs complete the look and feel of the space. The sitting room is a great and relaxing place to spend downtime after a long day of sight-seeing in London.

We’ve had several guests book this excellent house for the holidays, and simply adorned Christmas trees (which can be procured for you by the local housekeeper) look perfect by the window.

3rd Floor: Master en suite Bedroom

Back to the central staircase and up the stairs to the Master bedroom. And it really is the Master, much more spacious, luxurious and well-appointed than the other two perfectly comfortable but smaller and more simple attic bedrooms.  With families traveling together, this is obviously where the parental head-of-household types will be enjoying themselves.  For couples or groups traveling together, you may wish to draw straws for this one!

The large King bed is surrounded by gorgeous and interesting objets d’art, including a hammered metal chest of drawers and lamps from India, as well built-in bookshelves and lovely framed pieces on the walls.  Two large windows fill the room with light.

The en suite bathroom as a shower stall, as well as a long, deep soaking tub with hand-held shower.  Side-by-side sinks, a toilet and a bidet, as well as a cabinet holding the washer and dryer are located in this room.

4th Floor: Two Bedrooms and Shared Bathroom

Up the last flight of stairs to a landing with a very sweet citrus tree displayed in the landing alcove under the window. The two smaller attic bedrooms are housed up here, along with the shared bathroom.

Each of the upper bedrooms has sloping attic ceilings (mind your head), Velux partial skylight windows, double beds and a desk. One has a wardrobe, the other has a single fold out bed perfect for children sharing the room.  These simple rooms are comfortable, quiet and – late or light sleepers take note – quite private from the rest of the house.

The shared hallway bathroom is tiled and hung with sweetly drawn animal prints. It has a tub and power shower-over-tub.

Additional Feature – Attached Apartment.

There is a small 1-bedroom apartment at the sub-ground level of the house (completely separate and private from the house), which can be rented with the house to accommodate up to 9 people. Weekly Flat Rental: £ 850

The most convenient underground stop is Notting Hill Gate, approximately a 10-minute walk. There are many buses nearby as well.

Down the block in one direction is a fantastic Greek/Mediterranean cafe and bakery, Haminados, open from 6am to 10pm, with an incredible selection of fresh pastries, sandwiches, soups, quiches, pies, deli items like hummus and tzatziki and marinated cheese. This was the favorite find of our last visit, you’ll love the friendly and accommodating owner, the reasonable prices, and the charming stone patio out back with an olive tree and random framed photos of The Beatles.

Next door to Haminados is a popular gastropub, The Prince Bonaparte. A few blocks the other direction is the Italian deli and cafe chain, Carrluccio’s, and the highly recommended Notting Hill Brasserie is less than a mile away.

This is a desirable area, hip and artistic, filled with restaurants, interesting shops, boutiques, organic markets and of course the daily produce stalls and weekly antique markets of Portobello Road.  Plus, the Notting Hill neighborhood is in great and easy proximity to all that London has to offer.

About Notting Hill:

The yearly Notting Hill carnival takes place in August, and you’ll definitely want to know about it if it will be happening during your stay. A very lively event, it can be lots of fun to be a part of, or a complete bummer if you aren’t expecting it while on holiday and seeking the peace and quiet of a centrally located but residential area.

Home to many well-known and celebrated shops and bookstores, including Blenheim Books. Some of the best antique and boutique shopping can be found here, as well as excellent Caribbean and French-African food.
