About South Kensington:

South Kensington is vibrant, active, affluent and quite multi-cultural as many diplomats and members of the international community reside or have offices here.  Once an agricultural area that supplied city-dwellers with fruits and veg, The Great Exhibition in Hyde Park in 1851 helped pave the way for South Kensington to become a cosmopolitan mini-metropolis housing such world renowned cultural and scientific institutions as the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum and Royal Albert Hall which are all within very tidy walking distance of each other. Hyde Park, Kensington Palace and Kensington Gardens are very near, and it’s a short walk to Chelsea.

There is terrific shopping in the area, including both antique stores and high fashion shops to rival those found on King’s Road in Chelsea.

At least 100 pubs, restaurants and eateries are situated in this thriving neighborhood, along with artisan food shops, markets, wine and cheese vendors and other specialty stores. On Saturday there is a terrific Farmer’s Market on Bute Street, with everything from flowers to fish to fresh baked breads and anything in between.

Getting Around:

The tube stops in the area are Gloucester Road and South Kensington.  The Piccadilly line and Circle line will both take travelers swiftly to all the fantastic areas, sites and attractions of London. Taxis are plentiful and actually quite reasonable, especially after a long day of museums, walks and sightseeing.
