Flat Description:

Truly a gem of a luxury holiday flat occupying the raised ground and lower ground floors of a beautiful South Kensington building around the Onslow Gardens square, with direct access to the private gardens off the large open sitting room.

High open ceilings, thoughtful, eclectic decor, rich woods and vibrant natural colors, photos don’t really do this holiday property justice as the warmth experienced in person is hard to capture in snapshots. We’ve tried, though, to give you a sense of the lushness of the details here – velvet fabrics, gleaming wood, aspect lighting, and the bright airy sense of open space both in the main open plan reception room as well coming in from the French doors out to the communal gardens.

An American-style master suite (King bed) and comfortable second bedroom (Queen bed), plus hallway office space, puts this in the running as one of our new favorites, with recent & return visitors raving about the size, the decor and the utterly perfect location.

Situated at the back of a period building in a prestigious residential London postcode location, this is a very private, richly luxurious, comfortable, spacious and special property for holiday makers in town for business, entertaining or pleasure.

Above the notes from our first visit to the flat there is one word scrawled in large letters across the top of the lined paper, underlined several times: Spectacular!

The combined living and dining area is large, spacious, and bright with 3 near floor-to-ceiling French windows, extra tall ceilings and tons of light reflecting off the gleaming hardwood flooring. The warmth of the marbled paint style used on the soft green walls may not translate in photos, but the effect from inside the room is all glow and ambient richness. (Quick to judge and sometimes a bit impatient with gimmick, we were expecting to be put off. Instead we absolutely fell in love with this design choice, along with the entire flat and the rest of its thoughtfully selected elements).

Two large and comfortable patchwork armchairs, lovely moss green velvet two-seat (three-seat, in a comfortable squeeze) sofa, unusual light jade and orange polished stone coffee table, area rug, decorative fireplace, antique needlework footstool/bench, curio cabinet, antique hutch, reading lamps and colorful, oversized canvas paintings of birds in flight. Flatscreen television and state-of-the-art stereo system complete the luxe leisure space.

Through the French doors there is a small staircase leading out to the open communal gardens, which are reserved for the private enjoyment of the residents in this exclusive block. Two dining chairs serve as occasional seating in the sunlight that (sometimes) beams through the bay windows.

On the other side of the room is the extra long wood dining table with 6 mismatched dining chairs. The table seats 6 to 8 without problem, and could probably fit 10 in the event of a nice dinner party or occasion calling for guests to entertain.

A giant mirror over the dining area help light up the golden-hued room, and two interesting curio hutches are mounted in each corner of the room. You don’t notice until you’ve sat here for a bit, exactly how thoughtfully placed all of the furnishings are, how nicely done the decor is, and how simply, and casually, subtly artful it is in its execution. (Have we mentioned how charmed we were by this unusual self-catering flat?).

A few steps from the front door toward the living area kis the kitchen, open plan looking into the dining area and living room. The kitchen, recently redone, is sort of a galley style walk-through, and fully equipped with integrated countertop electric stove, oven, microwave, slim dishwasher, and a mid-to-small fridge/freezer. Good storage and food pantry, plus a wide Belfast sink and nice fixtures. A kitchen island provides additional counter space.

It is not a large gourmet cooking style kitchen, however, it is open, and well-fitted, and nicely laid out, with all the modern conveniences. One could cook a good fancy meal here, but certainly one could also choose to avail themselves of all the excellent pre-prepared and partially-prepared gourmet foodstuffs from nearby Waitrose, Sainsbury, Tesco or Marks & Spencer, as well as take-away from one of many excellent restaurants in the area.

Master King Bedroom:
Extra large American-style master bedroom with 6-foot King bed, is at the back of the flat, with a lightwell and partial views through the bay windows up to the garden. This en-suite bedroom  has large closets, dressing table, side tables, reading lamps and a large flatscreen TV across from the bed. The ensuite bathroom has a bathtub, handheld shower, sink & toilet.

The shared shower room is just outside this room, off the hall.

Double Bedroom:
The cozy second bedroom has a 5-foot Queen bed and a locked door into an interior vestibule/courtyard. This room is snug and quiet, with antique mirror, nice wooden dresser and bedside lamps. There is a good separation of space from the master bedroom, though the shared shower room is just outside the master bedroom down the hall.

Cloakroom: Lower ground floor at bottom of staircase, with toilet and wash basin.

Shared shower Room: Located just outside the Master bedroom, this shower room is almost a wet room, with tiled shower stall, sink, toilet, towel warmer.

En suite bathroom: In the master bedroom, this en suite has a bathtub, handheld shower, sink and toilet. A small window from the interior vestibule lets in a bit of natural light.

Enter on the raised ground floor (about 6 steps above street level), from the long entry hallway that leads from the front of the building to the quiet back, by the garden. Once inside the flat, the open kitchen is straight ahead, continuing into the extra large combined sitting & dining room, which open out to the private residence gardens (shared with other homes in the block).

Back at the front door, to the immediate left is the staircase down to the bedrooms and bathrooms. Descend 17 steps down to the lower ground floor. A door at the bottom of the stairs opens into a bright-red walled water closet/guest cloakroom with toilet and wash basin.

The small Queen bedroom is first on the right heading down the hallway back toward the garden side of the building. Next is a small vestibule and a large built-in desk/office nook with extra long desk, two chairs, shelving and even a printer for those sometimes necessary working holidays.

At the end of the hall is the shared family shower room, laundry closet with washer and separate dryer, and the ensuite King Master bedroom.

The nearest underground stops are  Gloucester (4-5 minutes) and South Kensington (5 – 6 minutes). The immediate neighborhood boasts some excellent food providers, markets, restaurants and take-away shops. Museums, Albert Hall, Hyde Park, Chelsea and Knightsbridge shopping are all within easy walking distance.

This is a perfect location in London for first-time-to-London’ers and practically-an-ex-pat repeat visitors alike. There is literally something for everyone in this area of South Kensington, with the rest of London’s fine features at your fingertips.
